HBC Fall Picnic & Ride!

It looks like great weather for our HBC Annual Fall Picnic!  The ride will start from Big East Fork Park, right at the foot of the fabled Stillhouse climb, where we will also have the picnic after the ride.  Please park in the lot on the east side of the road (which would be on your left if you were heading south and up the big climb).  We are told there should be plenty of space to park, and the CSS lot just up the road is available if we need it.  The pavilion (different from in years past) is a bigger one (also on the left side) and is where we will have the picnic after the ride. 

We will have ride options of 34 and 50 miles.  The Club will provide lunch from Firehouse Subs upon our return to the picnic area, with delivery at 11:30.  The Club will also provide water and soft drinks.  Here's the interesting website of Big East Fork, which we so often ride past either before or after the big climb:

Our HBC Secretary Debbie Wason will lead the Long route of 50 miles, which takes the gradual climb up Cumberland for a rest stop at Fairview at mile 15.  Then the route does some challenging hills on Bradford, Barnhill, and Greenbriar.  It comes back by Oscar Green and the fun run down Pewitt before returning on Old Harding and Big East.

Bob Whitmer will lead the Collegial ride at a 14-15 mph pace on the Short route of 34 miles.  It follows the Long route to the rest stop at Fairview and then comes back by Caney Fork.  From Fernvale the route climbs Backbone Ridge and gets back for the picnic by climbing Stillhouse!  Of course, riders may take Old Harding and Big East from Fernvale if they so choose and avoid the hills!
