Walt's Eastside Elevations!
Cecil Lewis Park at Trinity, 3680 North Chapel Rd., Franklin 37067
For Saturday Walt has designed a fascinating eastside ride. While it covers mostly familiar roads, it takes most of them backwards from the way we have usually ridden them! This will make for some fun runs on Newman, Paw Paw, and Sanford, but it turns Independent Hill and Burke Hollow into bears! The full route is 52 miles, along with a Short option of 43 miles. The routes run together for the first 16.6 miles. Both have a rest stop at the Almaville Market, at mile 28 on the Long route and mile 25 on the Short route. This is scenic, gorgeous countryside, especially in the springtime!
Walt notes a couple of places on the Long route to exercise EXTREME caution:
1) Mile 21. 1 - The turn from South Windrow onto Newman is a steep downhill to a left turn where that road has an adverse camber. You must take the turn slowly, watch for on-coming traffic, or end up off the road.
2) Mile 32.7 - On the Paw Paw Springs downhill, again the road slopes away during a left-hand curve. Again this must be taken with a slower speed. Also, It is a blind curve. Riders have gone off the road here!
The Short route - Follows the same general course, but features instead the nice downhill on Coleman Road and the scenic climb up Rehobeth.
